As some of you may know I recently found out I'm gonna be a dad. I have a 2013 Ford Fusion that I'm perfectly happy with. But in a hypothetical situation what is the ultimate daddy's car(preferably in the sub 60K range)? My vote goes for the CTS-V Wagon.

Kinja'd!!!

My Runner up would be the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8.

CTS-V wagon wins it in my book.

STI would be my runner-up.

That is sort of where the inspiration for this post came from. You are my hero for this week.

I need my own Daddy's rocket sled. I don't think my 159hp land yacht fills that role very well.

Well, honestly, I'd probably want him to have an Aston, or perhaps a 205 GTi... Anyway, to take the question a little more seriously, I'd give it to the XF Sportbrake:

My parents had a slew of BMWs/Hondas when I was growing up. My mom did have a Toyota Sienna for a year, but it broke so she replaced it with a 3 series. Just get a sedan and tell your kids to pile in.

I've heard the Trailblazer SS is more fun to drive then the SRT8, because RWD..also, isn't that hard to make faster then a SRT, because LS.

I don't want to burst your bubble the the TB SS is AWD and not RWD(at least not in Canada) but I get you on the LS part.

As an actual dad (2 young boys) and owner of said vehicles:

1. Fun = CTS V Wagon. My boys get a hoot and like to ride around it. I keep it reasonable, but they love the sense of acceleration. By way of comparison - I got rid of a immaculate, owned-from-new 1999 Boxster so I could cart my boys around in the V Wagon.

2. Pragmatic = minivan. Yes, it's an appliance. Correct, it's not fun to drive. But the thing's darn useful, practical and utilitarian. And I don't care nearly as much if they trash the mini van compared to my Wagon.

Everybody handles it differently (and there's no right or wrong), but mini vans exist because they are practical and useful. Not a bit of fun, but useful and they have their place.

You can take out a fuse to disable the AWD but ALL the TB SS were AWD from factory.

There are lots of go fast bits for the 6.1 and 6.4, but I don't think either are is reliable as the LS. Well the 6.1 isn't at least.

The E90 has aged so well. I really, really want one for my next car...either that or an E39 M5. Both are so great with 4 doors, and a nice V8.

I wish there was a legit comparison video on the web - would imagine that'd make a great episode of some kind of head to head...the torque of the M5 vs the high revving wail of the M3.

Love the two choices. Personally I prefer the Caddy. But getting little ones in and out is easier with an SUV. You don't have to bend down as far. You day "no big deal now" but just wait. One day it will all make sense.

I very nearly went with an E39 M5, but decided to go with newer (and more track-worthy + screaming redline) than classic. Would still love to have one someday, though.

That would be an awesome head to head review. Maybe we can lobby Harris to do it.

V8 power + manual transmission + 4 doors + hydraulic rack = rare beast

Love it.

Yeah - the E90 would make more sense in every way - newer, more track capable, it's a safer purchase too regardless of how insane a car it is. But the E39 is such a classic and I feel like if I don't experience it now, it'll be unapproachable further down the road (assuming it'll start appreciating in value soon, and it'll be an even older car).

And seriously, that would be right up Chris Harris' alley - lots of oversteer, manual, RWD, and he seems to have a thing for practical cars.

02/02/2015 at 17:47

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah, the E90s will still be depreciating a bit longer while a nice E39 will keep value, or even go up, like you posit.

Maybe we can get Chris and Tiff to get together to answer the question once and for all. Ha!

Have you read this? http://www.m3post.com/goodiesforyou/…

Wow, never seen that before! Will make for some great evening reading - thanks.

Assuming I don't suddenly strike gold, I'm thinking an E39 M5 for a few years, followed by an E90 M3 will be the way to go. But knowing myself, like with my current E30 I won't be able to let either of them go and I'll be forever stuck with a garage full of old BMWs.

Wait a minute...that actually sounds awesome!

Wrong...They were available in both RWD and AWD configurations....RWD being more desirable because of the dreaded front differential bearing noise.
